After a 30-year hiatus from European football, Nottingham Forest mark their long-awaited return to the continental stage with a UEFA Europa League (UEL) trip to Real Betis.
Match News and Current Form
Real Betis warmed up for their fifth successive European campaign with an impressive 3-1 win against Real Sociedad on Friday night. That brought a timely end to a three-match winless run prior (D2, L1) as they seek to replicate last season’s run to the final of the UEFA Conference League. Going one better than that this term will be the ultimate goal for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, and history would suggest they’re in line to make a positive start to this season’s competition having won 11 of their last 18 major European home games in the group/league phase (D6, L1).
A landmark day awaits here for Forest and their supporters, some of whom will be witnessing their side play in Europe for the first time ever. With memories of back-to-back European Cup wins in 1979 and 1980 under the legendary Brian Clough, Ange Postecoglou is the man tasked with bringing the glory days back for Forest, but his start to managerial life at the City Ground has been a little uninspiring (D1, L2). Postecoglou lifted this trophy last season whilst in charge of Spurs, and while that may be enough to breed confidence, a 1-1 draw against Burnley at the weekend was certainly far from ideal preparation as it stretched Forest’s winless run to five matches (D2, L3).
Head-to-Head History
This will be a first-ever competitive H2H between these sides. Betis do tend to struggle against English opposition, losing seven of their last nine European games against English sides (W1, D1), including last season’s Conference League final.

Hot Stats and Streaks
Seventeen of Betis’ last 18 competitive games saw both teams score.
Six of Betis’ last eight UEL home games saw over 2.5 goals.
Forest have scored first in their last two games but won neither (D1, L1).
Forest are without a clean sheet in their last eight away games in all competitions.
Key Players to Watch and Missing Players
Betis’ Cucho Hernández has scored in back-to-back games and a goal from him tends to be a good omen as he’s never lost when scoring for the club (W4, D3). Chris Wood has scored in the UEL before whilst playing for Burnley and Birmingham - four of his last five club goals, as well as his last two in this competition, arrived before half-time.
Isco remains Betis’ most notable long-term absentee. Forest were without Murillo against Burnley, but he could yet be in contention here.

Betting Analysis
Forest have struggled for momentum under Postecoglou as he tries to put his stamp on things, so backing Betis to win in the infancy of his reign seems the logical choice.
