Jonny Clayton (48) overcame Josh Rock (22) in the final of the fifth stop on the darts European Tour, despite his opponent whitewashing world number three Michael van Gerwen (33) 7-0 in the semi-finals.

Clayton and Rock played out a thrilling final, with the former eventually winning 8-6 to claim the Interwetten Austrian Darts Open.

Both players put in exceptional showings, hitting five 180s each and both averaging 101 across three darts.

The win was Clayton's first title on the European Tour since 2018 when he was victorious again in Austria.

He also had to overcome the likes of Jelle Klaasen, Damon Heta, Jason Cullen and Daryl Gurney on his route to the final.

Despite falling short in the final, Rock pulled off a historic 7-0 victory against darts legend Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals.

He hit 70% of his checkouts (7/10), capitalising on a poor showing by his opponent who failed to hit any of his possible eight.

Rock has impressed since transitioning into professional darts and the result against Van Gerwen will only boost his reputation - along with his valiant effort in the final.

He also had to beat Krzysztof Ratajski, Mickey Mansell and Mensur Suljovic on his route to facing Clayton.

World number one Michael Smith crashed out in the round of 16, losing to Suljovic, with the Austrian also eliminating former world champion and current number two Peter Wright in the second round.

Gerwyn Price - who has won eight European tour finals in his career - did not take part in Austria.
