After claiming his first win following his hamstring injury, Tallon Griekspoor was now virtually up into the 31st spot in the ATP Rankings and set to face 9th-ranked Lorenzo Musetti in the third round in Madrid.
The highest-ranked Dutchman dipped early after conceding a quick break from Musetti, who dominated on serve and controlled much of the first set. Griekspoor levelled with the Italian in the latter stages, but allowed Musetti to retake a break lead and see out the first set, winning 14/18 first-service points and 2/6 break points.
The second set looked to be much of the same after another early break from Musetti, who dazzled with a fabulous backhand but couldn't put much more pressure on Griekspoor after a fourth-game break.
Instead, Griekspoor fought his way back into the contest by taking on a riskier approach that yielded him three break points in the middle of the second set, the third of which he took to equalise once again.
Musetti and Griekspoor fought hard under the Spanish sun, barely giving away any return points in the final six games, as only Musetti managed to win more than one return point in a single game and immediately breaking Griekspoor in a pivotal moment by doing so, with the score at 5-5 and set to clinch the match.
Musetti put an end to the match after 101 minutes, eliminating Tallon Griekspoor in a 6-4, 7-5 victory to move on to the round of 16 in Madrid, where he'll face Czech star Jiri Lehecka.
