Cologne had been in poor form heading into the game, and their morale took another hit when the Fuggerstädter went ahead, as Frederik Winther’s ball upfield was controlled expertly by Florian Niederlechner before the forward fired a shot across goal which went in off the right post to make it 1-0 after 15 minutes. The home fans thought things had got even worse less than five minutes later, when Carlos Gruezo looped a header over Marvin Schwäbe and into the net – however, he was adjudged to be in an offside position and Cologne’s blushes were spared.
To the surprise of many, the visitors were not able to kick on after taking the lead, as Die Geißböcke went on to take control for the remainder of the first half. That said, despite dominating possession, they were unable to turn their pressure into clear-cut chances on goal and headed into HT with the familiar feeling of being behind on the scoreboard.

This feeling didn’t last long after the restart, though, as the lively Linton Maina put a cross into the area which picked out Steffen Tigges, who allowed the ball to bounce before directing his shot into the right corner to draw the hosts level. After maintaining their pressure, Cologne completed the turnaround just after the hour mark when Denis Huseinbašić shot on the turn inside the area and found the right corner to make it 2-1. Their celebrations were short-lived though, as Daniel Caligiuri shot first-time into the right corner to equalise for Augsburg.
The pendulum swung once again for the final time in an unpredictable encounter with just under 10 minutes remaining, when Tigges fired home his second from close range after referee Felix Zwayer had played advantage for a foul inside the area. This crucial victory lifts Cologne four places to seventh, while Augsburg remain 12th after this setback.
