'Jackpot' Lewis was comfortably beaten 3-0 by Australian number 20 seed Damon Heta.
Englishman Adrian Lewis won the world title in 2011 and 2012 but has failed to live up to those standards since, and recently claimed he was close to considering retirement despite having high expectations for this year's competition.
Heta produced a 96 average, including four 180s and 56% on the doubles with two ton-plus finishes
"When it comes to the big games and big names, there's a thought that I have to play really well. Maybe I take it easy on people that I think they're below me on the rankings. Maybe that's a thought that goes through my head," said 'The Heat' after his impressive whitewash victory.
"I think it just all happened for me and I kept the pressure on and maybe there's a bit of hype about Adrian Lewis being a champion before and can he recapture this and do this."
"I know what I can bring. I've been unlucky in some circumstances. I'll be stronger for it."
Earlier in the day, Vladyslav Omelchenko made history by becoming the first Ukrainian to play at the World Championship, although he was beaten 3-0 by England's Luke Woodhouse.
