Ghana international defender Abdul Mumin has joined Girona FC on a three-year contract after becoming a free agent following the expiry of his deal with Rayo Vallecano.

Girona confirmed the signing on Tuesday, announcing that the 28-year-old centre-back has agreed a contract running until 2029 as the club strengthens its defence ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The Spanish club described Mumin as a physically imposing defender whose strength in duels and experience at the highest level of Spanish football will add solidity to their back line.

The move brings Mumin’s four-year spell with Rayo Vallecano to an end. He joined the Madrid club in 2022 from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães after developing in Denmark with FC Nordsjælland and HB Køge.

Rayo initially signed him on a four-year contract, and he went on to make more than 60 appearances for the club across competitions.

Mumin’s final season at Rayo, however, was disrupted by a serious ACL injury suffered in March 2025. The injury kept him out for more than a year, with injury records listing a 343-day absence.

He eventually returned to action in April 2026 but had little opportunity to rebuild his rhythm, making only three La Liga appearances and playing 78 minutes in total before the season ended.

The defender’s contract expired at the end of June and he turned down a reduced renewal offer from the Madrid club, making him available on a free transfer.

Flashscore sources understand at the time indicated interest from clubs in Spain, England, France and Major League Soccer, with Girona among the teams closely monitoring his situation.

Mumin has now opted to remain in Spain, choosing Girona as the next chapter of his career after attracting interest from several markets.

The transfer also represents an interesting move for both player and club. Girona are coming off a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that ended with relegation from La Liga.

The Catalan club will therefore enter the new season with promotion as a major objective, and Mumin’s experience of competing in the Spanish top flight could prove valuable in that pursuit.

The defender is an established Ghana international. He made his Black Stars debut against Mali in June 2024 and was subsequently included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
