A superb curling effort from Nicklas Rojkjaer was enough to give FC Nordsjaelland a hard-fought 1-0 win over Swiss contenders FC St. Gallen when the sides clashed in the first leg of their Conference League playoff meeting.

On Thursday evening, FC Nordsjaelland secured a 1-0 home victory over Swiss side St. Gallen in the first leg of the play-off round for a spot in the Conference League group stage.

The match's only goal came early on, with Nicklas Rojkjaer proving the match-winner thanks to a delicate finish with the inside of his boot from the edge of the penalty area.

This gives Nordsjaelland a solid position heading into the return leg in Switzerland in a week, though the margin of victory was not quite as large as those seen in their previous qualifying rounds in Farum.

In the second qualifying round, the Copenhagen side eliminated Swedish club GAIS with a 6-1 aggregate score in Farum. In the most recent qualifying round, it was Iceland's Valur who suffered a heavy defeat on the Danish artificial turf, with Nordsjaelland winning 5-0 and advancing 7-0 on aggregate.

Now, only a match in Switzerland stands between Nordsjaelland and European football this autumn—a feat they last achieved in 2023.

The home side showed promising signs on the artificial turf on Thursday evening, and it quickly became apparent that the hosts are very comfortable on their fast home surface.

Nordsjaelland broke forward on a counter-attack that Rojkjaer ultimately finished off, curling the ball into the net with a precise strike from the edge of the box.

From that point on, St. Gallen gradually worked their way into the match. The second half was dominated by St. Gallen, yet the two best chances fell to the home side.

Nordsjaelland lacked clinical finishing, while at the other end, St. Gallen were unable to create clear-cut chances of the same quality as the hosts.
