This year's prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing will draw to a close on Sunday, as Russian teenager and favourite Mirra Andreeva takes on home star Qinwen Zheng, whose run to the final was certainly not expected at the start of the tournament. The contest begins at 13:30 CET.

Match news and form

Mirra Andreeva played her best match of the tournament and defeated 20-year-old Nikola Bartunkova, 6-2, 6-2, with 16 winners and 10 unforced errors. As a result, the 19-year-old has reached her ninth WTA final and her fourth at the WTA 1000 level.

Andreeva's ride to the final hasn't been smooth, as she needed to rally from a set down against Yue Yuan and edge Ekaterina Alexandrova, 7-6(4), 7-6(3). As a consequence of this campaign, the reigning Roland Garros champion has sealed her place in the WTA Finals and her top-three debut.

Qinwen Zheng has ended her near two-year final drought and could not have found a better place to do so than on home soil. After surviving four consecutive three-set matches in the first four rounds, the Chinese star knocked out Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 7-6(6), and then Elise Mertens, 7-5, 6-2.

Zheng missed almost all of the second half of the previous season and dropped outside the top 150. The former world No. 4 showed signs of a strong recovery with a quarter-final finish at the US Open, where she beat Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek, and now is set to return to the top 30.

Head-to-head

Zheng leads 1–0. Their only previous meeting took place right here in Beijing, where the home player won in the quarter-finals two years ago, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
