GOG left no doubt of the outcome when they humiliated the reigning Danish champions Aalborg Handball through a 39-27 win on Saturday afternoon.

With a magnificent tactical performance GOG’s men’s handball team secured an impressive, big victory over the reigning champions, Aalborg Handball on Saturday afternoon.

On the court, playmaker Oli Mittun dominated proceedings on court against the visitors from North Jutland, while on the bench, coach Kasper Christensen demonstrated tactical acumen throughout the match.

The match was played at a high pace from the start, featuring two teams performing exceptionally well in attack.

Both teams fielded experienced goalkeepers with Niklas Landin and Kevin Møller but they struggled to make many saves, as the shots were coming from close range.

The teams stayed neck and neck throughout the first half, with the home side enjoying the edge as they led 16–14 at the break.

GOG coach Kasper Christensen anticipated that Aalborg would alter their defense during the break. The visitors shifted to a 5-1 defensive formation, but the Funen side was ready with a seven-versus-six attack, making that defensive choice difficult for the visitors.

Goals flew past both Landin and Fabian Norsten—who was handed a chance to shine in the Aalborg goal during the match—but there was nothing either of them could do to stop the onslaught. The fast and penetrative players Hjalte Lykke and Oli Mittun constantly tore apart Aalborg’s defense. The 21-year-old Faroese player, in particular, was outstanding as both a scorer and a playmaker.

Just over nine minutes into the second half, GOG had opened up a seven-goal lead, 25–18.

Kasper Christensen told his team that Aalborg would likely abandon their 5–1 defense. He was right. An eight-minute scoreless spell for Aalborg allowed GOG to extend their lead, resulting in the defending champions suffering a humiliating defeat.
